“This notion that everyone should have a paid newsletter is bizarre. Some content should be paid for directly while other content should be used as a tool to monetize indirectly.” Some newsletter talk from A Media Operator (a.k.a. Jacob Donnelly), in “Why I Decided to Leave Substack.” “To be more explicit, I imagine many of these creators are going to realize that there is good money to be made in advertising.”
“Watching others paint is relaxing.” True… A collection of YouTube links on MetaFilter.
I’ve been enjoying Ariel Norling’s “I Know a Place” weekly architecture and real estate newsletter, in which she features themed home listings. A recent installment was on places in DC, and I like the Adams Morgan house with a gambrel roof. I also now know what a gambrel roof is.
“Imitation is the birthplace of human behavior. ... However, why is it also intuitive for us to scorn imitation as we age?” More to That: “The Stairway of the Self.” I love this stuff.

“Make something (a book, a print, a poster, a documentary, a whatever) that you would have made no matter what, and offer it up to members at a significant discount.” Writer/photographer/walker Craig Mod on how to run a successful membership newsletter.
