Never did TM but there was a TM center next door to me in Cambridge growing up and I swear on my children's lives that I saw someone levitating through the window one day :)
I'm not a big TM guy. Here's what I usually suggest to people, my 2cents: do the free intro series on Headspace with guided meditations to learn the basics of vipassana (breath-based mindfulness, IMO the best method to start with). From there, you can "graduate" to un-guided timed sessions. And at first, just get comfortable. Sit cross legged on a couch for back support. The back does build strength, but if it's totally distracting, better to ease into it before blasting into lotus :) Really enjoy dis one, Edith
I have the same back pain in the same area! I have never taken my problems to the internet, so the links help. But it also helped me in the moment to focus on core strength and keep abs lightly engaged because I think I was pronating too much and tightening core helped pull in. This is not scientific
I took the TM course about 12 years ago when it was more than twice as expensive as it is today. It's a helpful technique, but the program felt a bit cult-y. Also, the instructors make it seem like the mantra they give you is unique and mysterious, but it's not. A quick Google search will lead you to a list of all the mantras and the factors that determine which one you'll receive. I'm still glad I learned TM, but you could probably get the same value for free from a YouTube video.

Thank you, Alex! This is great. Soon my back will be totally meditation-ripped
